The Environment Division of Hunter Councils Inc was created in 2004 in response to an identified need for expanded environmental management support and services to member councils. The highly successful Hunter and Central Coast Regional Environmental Management Strategy was adopted as a discrete program of the Environment Division.
With a team of 12 full time staff, the Environment Division has leveraged the well established reputations and networks of Hunter Councils Inc and the HCCREMS initiative to rapidly expand the range and scope of activities and services to member councils. In a region covering nearly 4 million hectares, the Environment Division team work with 14 urban, rural and coastal councils facilitating a collaborative approach to sustainable planning, development and natural resource management.
The key activities in which the Environment Division currently engages are:

- Providing specialist support and services to its member Councils on environmental management and planning issues
- Developing and maintaining an ever growing repository of regional natural resource management data and mapping
- Design and management of a range of regional environmental projects through the Hunter and Central Coast Regional Environmental Management Strategy (HCCREMS) framework.
