Shortland Wetlands Centre is located west of Newcastle and is a 10 minute walk from Sandgate Railway Station. It is situated on 45ha of rehabilitated wetland on the edge of Hexham Swamp. More than 170 species of birds have been recorded here, with over 30 of those breeding on the site. During summer months a colony of Egrets nest in the Paperbark Trees in one of the shallow ponds.
